Redspeed calls for smarter speed enforcement to protect vulnerable riders

  • New monthly thoughtleadership series from Redspeed’s Tom Duckham focuses on smarter, data‑driven measures to protect vulnerable riders.
  • Calls for intelligent, evidence‑based camera deployment that targets the highest‑risk routes and locations for motorcyclists, rather than blunt, blanket enforcement.
  • Redspeed urges closer collaboration to create safer, more enjoyable riding for all.

Redspeed is urging a renewed focus on intelligent speed enforcement and data‑driven road safety, as motorcycle casualties remain stubbornly high despite advances in vehicle technology.

As part of a new monthly thought‑leadership series from Redspeed, motorcycling and road safety expert Tom Duckham argues that targeted, tech‑enabled enforcement can play a vital role in protecting riders without alienating responsible motorcyclists.

Intelligent enforcement for riders

In the first of his monthly articles for Redspeed, Tom Duckham highlights that riders are still significantly over‑represented in killed and seriously injured statistics, particularly on popular rural routes and at junctions where drivers fail to detect approaching bikes. He stresses that speed remains a critical factor – not only in collisions but in the severity of injury – and that enforcement has to be smarter, more transparent and better aligned with rider behaviour.

“As motorcyclists, we are acutely aware of our vulnerability, but we are also passionate about the freedom and enjoyment that riding offers,” he writes. “The answer is not blunt enforcement that treats every rider as a problem; it is intelligent use of data and technology to intervene where risk is highest and to support riders to make better choices.”

Data, technology and rider trust

Duckham emphasises the potential of linked data – from roadside enforcement, collision records and traffic flows – to help authorities understand precisely where and when motorcyclists face the greatest risk and to design proportionate interventions. He also points to emerging in‑vehicle and roadside technologies that can help drivers detect motorcycles earlier and encourage more consistent compliance with posted limits.

“Where enforcement is clearly evidence‑based, and where riders can see that cameras are being deployed to tackle known risk rather than to raise revenue, trust goes up and compliance follows,” he notes. “That is where companies like Redspeed, working with police forces, local and highways authorities, can make a real difference – by providing the tools that enable fair, consistent and transparent enforcement.”

Ongoing insights for industry and policymakers

Redspeed believes Duckham’s monthly insights will be particularly relevant for road safety professionals, technology providers and motorcycle manufacturers seeking to align safety innovation with real‑world rider behaviour. The company is calling for closer collaboration between enforcement technology suppliers, police, highways authorities and the motorcycle industry to design corridors of safe, enjoyable riding that balance performance, freedom and protection.
